My approach is to first do some age-appropriate diagnostic assessment to find out what the reader knows about reading, and to learn about the reader's self-confidence, interests, and motivation to read. The assessment is quick and allows me to rapidly grasp the reader's:
During the virtual reading sessions, I involve the reader in engaging reading and conversation using digital books, followed by games and/or activities to develop skills. Writing will also be incorporated.
Books are selected based on interest and reading level, making sure there is some degree of challenge so that progress can be made. Progress reports based on assessment are provided every three weeks.
